Borobudur Temple and Prambanan
If you want to experience an ancient Buddhist shrine, be sure to visit Borobudur Temple in Indonesia, which is also called the “stone lotus”. It is believed that it was built in the 9th century. For a long time this place served as a center of Buddhist pilgrimage, but later it was forgotten for many centuries. Only in the 19th century the temple was reopened.
At the same time as Borobudur, the Hindu complex of Prambanan was also built. The Shiva temple, full of mystery and beauty, is open to the public here. Nearby there are temples dedicated to Vishnu, Brahma, as well as three sanctuaries in honor of the sacred animals accompanying the gods.
Another interesting place is the Kraton Palace, which tells about the life of the Javanese sultans of the 19th century. Although some of the structures were destroyed by wars and earthquakes, the restored part of the complex gives an idea of its former beauty, with exquisite pavilions and canals.

You will get acquainted with its history, walk through the territory, go to individual temples, including the main one - Shiva, where many bas-reliefs with images of deities and animals are presented, and also get acquainted with the life of the Javanese of the 9th century. Next, you will visit Mendut, a 9th-century Buddhist temple located in the village of Mendut. The temple is located approximately three kilometers east of Borobudur. All three temples - Mendut, Borobudur and Pawon are Buddhist shrines and are located on the same line. There is a spiritual connection between these temples.
Afterwards, you will head to Borobudur Temple. You will have lunch on site at one of the restaurants. After this, you will have a tour of the ancient temple. You will go through all its levels and look at the unique architecture. Bas-reliefs placed on the walls tell about the history of Buddhism. On the upper platform there are 72 small bell-shaped stupas and one main one - the central one. Each of these stupas has special diamond-shaped openings through which you can see the Buddha statues hidden inside. A visit to a volcanic bunker, used by locals during eruptions, and to the “House of Memory” museum will introduce you to the region’s history and daily life under volcanic threat. You’ll also see the famous Alien Stone, a giant boulder shaped by volcanic activity.
One of the most memorable highlights is watching the sunrise on this active volcano. The peaceful silence and the first rays of the morning sun lend a magical atmosphere to Merapi’s majestic slopes, allowing you to truly sense the power of nature.
