History and activity

Ijen's last eruption occurred in 1936. Since then, the volcano has been considered safe to visit, although the crater was temporarily closed in 2011, 2012 and 2018 due to increased activity. Today, Ijen attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world eager to see its amazing landscapes.

What to see

1. Blue flame

• This phenomenon occurs due to the ignition of sulfur gases escaping from the depths of the volcano. It is most clearly visible at night, so night ascents are especially popular.

• The blue flame of Ijen is the largest and brightest in the world, making it a unique object to study and observe.

2. Acid lake

• The lake at the bottom of the crater is considered the largest acid lake in the world. Its water is saturated with sulfuric acid, which gives it a bright turquoise hue.

• The water temperature reaches 40°C and its pH approaches zero. Swimming in such a lake is impossible, but its view is mesmerizing.

3. Sulfur mining

• Local people, known as sulfur miners, collect sulfur from the volcano by hand. They carry baskets weighing up to 80 kg on their shoulders, receiving a relatively small fee for this.

• This is hard and dangerous work as they work without protective masks, which negatively affects their health.

Best time to visit

• Early morning is the optimal time for climbing. Tourists begin their climb at night to watch the sunrise at the top. This not only allows you to avoid the heat, but also enjoy breathtaking views.

Travel tips

1. Equipment

• Take a couple of liters of water with you – the climb can be tiring.

• Wear closed shoes with good soles: the trail is strewn with stones and sand.

• Bring a warm jacket: it is windy and cool at the top, especially at night.

• Headlamps will be needed for night climbs.

2. Photos

• The landscapes of Ijen are reminiscent of aliens: sulfur fumes, dead rock slopes, an azure lake and blue flames. The photos taken here will be impressive.

3. Security

• Due to the high concentration of sulfur in the air, it is recommended to use a respirator or mask, especially when approaching the crater.

How to get there
