Bromo Volcano and Bromo-Tengger-Semetu National Park

Bromo (Gunung Bromo) is one of the most famous and visited volcanoes in Indonesia. It is located on the Tengger Plateau in the east of the island of Java, in the heart of the national park of the same name. The volcano has a height of only 2400 meters, but its power and symbolism attract tourists from all over the world.
Features of Bromo Volcano

• Tengger Caldera: Bromo is located in a giant caldera with a diameter of about 10 km. The flat sandy bottom of the caldera, known as the “Sea of Sand” (Lautan Pasir), creates a unique landscape.

• Active volcano: Bromo is an active volcano that last erupted in 2016. Plumes of sulfur smoke constantly rise from the crater.

• Sacred Site: For the Tengger people, Bromo is a sacred volcano. The annual sacrifice ceremonies known as Upsara Kasada are held here.

The Legend of the Volcano

According to local legends, in the 15th century, the rulers of the Hindu kingdom, Joko Seger and Roro Anteng, took refuge in the Tengger Valley to escape Islamization. The gods helped them found a new kingdom and gave them many children, but demanded that the last child be sacrificed. When the couple broke their promise, the volcano awakened, and the younger prince himself went into the crater to save his people. In memory of this event, local residents annually make sacrifices to the gods.

Upsara Kasada ceremony

Every year, Tenggers climb Bromo to throw offerings into the crater: food, money, flowers, livestock. Some tourists visit the volcano at this time to witness a unique ritual.
