Monkey forest in Ubud

Monkey forest in Ubud

The Sacred Monkey Forest, located in the village of Padangtegal near Ubud, is a unique biosphere reserve in Bali where approximately 700 long-tailed macaques live in their natural environment. The official name of this place is Balinese Mandala Suci Wenara Wana, which translates to “Sacred Monkey Forest”. Its concept is based on the Hindu teachings of Tri Hita Karana, which emphasizes the importance of harmony between people, nature and God. The forest serves not only as a spiritual center, but also as a place for scientific research, providing fresh air and protecting the local ecosystem.
The park has a developed infrastructure: exhibition halls, an open-air stage, an animal clinic, a canteen, toilets and parking lots. The central square with a fountain and the alley decorated with carved stone sculptures create a mystical atmosphere. The main attraction of the forest is the three ancient temples of the 14th century, hidden under the dense canopy of trees, including the Dalem Agung Temple, dedicated to the god Shiva, and the Prajapati Temple, located near the cemetery.

Monkeys, which are considered sacred, feel like complete masters here. They feed on sweet potatoes, corn and bananas, and interact actively with visitors. These animals symbolize the protectors of sacred lands and play an important role in Balinese culture, as evidenced by their mention in the epic Ramayana.
In addition to macaques, the forest also contains rare tree species such as the banyan tree and sacred plants used in rituals. Various ceremonies are held here every year, including Ngelawang with barong dance and Tumpek Kandang, a festival dedicated to animals.

The Sacred Monkey Forest is a place where nature, culture and spirituality come together to create a unique haven of harmony on the island of Bali.
