Volcano Batur

Kintamani is a unique natural area on the island of Bali, which is a caldera formed as a result of ancient eruptions. This place surprises with its power, beauty and history, going back tens of thousands of years.

Geology and origin

Kintamani was created by a series of powerful eruptions that formed two calderas. The first, formed about 30,000 years ago, measures 13.8 × 10 km. In its center rises the Gunung Batur volcano (1717 m). Later, about 8,500 years ago, a second, smaller caldera appeared (6.4 x 9.4 km), which eventually filled with water, becoming the world's largest crater lake, Lake Batur.

Lake Batur

Lake Batur is not only a natural attraction, but also a vital resource for local residents. Its waters are used to irrigate fields, but swimming and motor boats are prohibited here. The lake is famous for its stable water level, which, according to legend, is associated with the protection of the goddess Devi Danu and recharge from underground springs.

Life around the caldera

Despite the risk of eruptions, the villages around the caldera remain inhabited. The fertile soil allows for several harvests a year, and the lake provides local fish. Peasants also mine volcanic sand and make souvenirs. Famous villages include Kintamani, Toya Bungkah, Batur and Trunyan, the latter famous for its unique burial practices.

Gunung Batur Volcano

Volcano Batur is active, although there have been no significant eruptions since 2000. The latest ash plume rose to a height of 300 meters, causing concern among local residents. Volcanic activity is regularly monitored, and in 2012 the Batura Caldera area was included in the UNESCO Global Geoparks program.

Climbing Batur

Climbing Volcano Batur is one of the most popular adventures in Bali. The path to the top does not require special preparation, but passes through steep sections. Guides accompanying tourists ensure safety and share stories about this amazing place.

At the top of the volcano, tourists will enjoy stunning views of the neighboring mountains Abang (2151 m) and Agung (3014 m), as well as Lake Batur. One of the main pleasures is watching the sunrise with a cup of hot coffee or tea, which can be purchased in a small cafe.

A special treat is cooking breakfast on volcanic steam: eggs and bananas are baked directly in the vents that emit heat.

4. Prohibited: independent ascent, as the terrain can be dangerous.
