Dreamland Beach, located on the west coast of the Bukit Peninsula in Bali, is one of the island's most famous beaches. Its popularity is due to its unique combination of picturesque landscapes, high waves ideal for surfing and a rich history.
General information
• Location: Bukit Peninsula, southern Bali.
• Beach length: About 500 meters.
• Surface: Golden sand with black areas near the rocks.
• Best time to visit: Dry season (April–October).
History and name
The name “Dreamland Beach” appeared in the 20th century. There are two versions of its origin:
1. Fabulous place:
In the 1970s, surfers from Australia began to actively visit this secluded beach, calling it “Dreamland” for its beauty and good waves. Legend has it that an Italian traveler was the first to give this name to this place after seeing its splendor.
2. Shattered Dream:
In the 1980s, the beach became part of an ambitious tourism development project on the Bukit Peninsula. But the financial crisis of 1998 and the arrest of Tommy Suharto, the organizer of the project, froze plans. The name “Dreamland” remained as a symbol of the local residents’ unfulfilled hopes for prosperity.
Beach Features
• Waves and surfing:
High waves, reaching more than a meter, make the beach popular among professional surfers. The conditions here are too difficult for beginners, so it is better to choose other places for training.
• Bathing:
Swimming here is not recommended due to strong currents, high waves and rocky bottom. However, at low tide the water becomes calmer and you can enjoy walks along the water's edge.
• Sunsets:
In the evening, the beach is especially beautiful: the sun's rays reflect off the rocks, creating an atmosphere of privacy and romance.
Infrastructure
On the beach there are:
• Restaurants and cafes:
Here you can try local cuisine. Prices are above average, especially near the beach.
• Rent of umbrellas and sun loungers:
Tourists can rent beach equipment or surfboards.
• Golf course:
At the top of the cliff lies one of the best golf courses on the island, covering an area of 85 hectares. It is famous for its magnificent views of the ocean.
Entertainment
1. Surfing and bodysurfing:
This is the main activity on the beach.
2. Photo sessions:
Dreamland is often used for filming music videos and wedding photo shoots.
3. Walking on the beach:
Secluded corners and cliffs are ideal for quiet walks.
Tips for tourists
• Bring water shoes:
The bottom is strewn with sharp stones, which can easily injure you.
• Be careful in water:
Powerful waves can knock even an experienced swimmer off his feet.
• Plan your trip on weekdays:
On weekends the beach is crowded with tourists and locals.
• Take water and a snack:
The cafes on the beach are overpriced.
