Artists' Trail in Ubud

Artists' Trail in Ubud

Ubud Artists' Trail (Campuhan Ridge Walk), also known as Champuhan Hill, is one of the most popular walking spots in Ubud. This is a scenic path that runs along the top of the Champouan mountain range, between the Champouan and Vos rivers. The Balinese call this place Bukit Gunung Lebah (Mountain Bee Slope), and English-speaking tourists sometimes call it Tjampuhan Sacred Hills.
Route description

The length of the trail is about 2 kilometers, and it is divided into three parts:

1. Start of the trail

The trail starts at Pura Gunung Lebah Temple, near Jl. Raya Ubud. To find the entrance, go to Villa Ibah, where there is a sign that says “Going to the hill.” After passing through a small fork, you need to go around the temple and follow the stairs up.
2. Main part

The main part of the trail runs along the top of the hill, where views of tropical thickets, clearings and surrounding nature open up. On the left you can see the river Vos and the houses on Jl. Raya Sanggingan, and the Champuan River flows to the right. People often practice yoga here, have picnics, or simply relax away from the noise of the city.

3. End of the route

The trail ends at the village of Sidem, where there are souvenir shops, cafes and spas. Further on is the village of Sebali, which is more secluded and calm. Returning along the trail takes less time thanks to the descent.

Walking the trail takes about two hours round trip. This is an ideal place for morning runs, walks in the fresh air and photo sessions.
History of the trail

The name “Artists’ Trail” appeared thanks to Russian-speaking tourists. Officially, the place is called “Champuan Ridge”. The rivers that skirt the path have been considered sacred since ancient times, since, according to the beliefs of the Balinese, they carried divine energy.

The Pura Gunung Lebah Temple, located at the beginning of the trail, was a place of pilgrimage. Beginning in the 1930s, European artists such as Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet began to come to Ubud and were inspired by the beauty of the area. It is believed that many of them created their first works here.
