Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

The Jatiluwi Rice Terraces cover an area of ​​approximately 303 hectares and are included in the UNESCO cultural heritage list as part of the subak irrigation system that has existed in Bali for over a thousand years. These artificial steps are handcrafted and designed to grow rice, which grows here all year round thanks to subak.

Three varieties of rice are grown on the terraces: white, red and black. The yield reaches 4 tons per hectare, however, due to growing consumption in Bali, additional rice is imported from neighboring islands. In addition to rice, coconuts, coffee, bananas and vegetables are also grown on the terraces.

Subak system

Subak is a unique irrigation system that supplies the terraces with water from mountain lakes and rivers through a complex network of canals, dams and waterfalls. The canals reach lengths of up to 3 km and depths of up to 40 m. The management of the subak is carried out by a community consisting of local farmers. This system not only distributes water efficiently, but also includes social and religious aspects aimed at harmony between man, nature and the gods.

Walks and scenery

Jatiluwi Rice Terraces is a place where there is something for everyone.

• Walks. There are comfortable paths along the terraces along which you can walk while enjoying the magnificent scenery.

• Photos. This is one of the best places in Bali for filming - terraces, palm trees and mountains create unique views.

• Seasonal changes. The landscape changes with the seasons: the fields can be mirror-like, green, golden or empty after the harvest.

Infrastructure

Near the terraces there are cafes and restaurants where you can try fresh rice dishes, including traditional rice desserts and drinks. Prices here are lower than in the south of the island: a full meal will cost about 100,000 rupees. There are also small hotels and villas nearby for those who want to stay overnight.

Religious ceremonies

Each stage of rice cultivation is accompanied by ceremonies organized by the Subak community. These rituals are aimed at attracting the blessings of the gods and protecting the harvest:

• Mapag Toya. Opening ceremony of irrigation canals.

• Ngendag Tanah Carik. Prayers for safe plowing.

•Ngekambuhin. Prayers for the protection of new plantings.

• Penyepian. Rite of protection against pests and birds.

• Nganyarin. Ritual preceding the harvest.

These ceremonies highlight the Balinese's deep connection with nature and the gods, who they believe help maintain the fertility of the land.
